A robbery attack on a mobile money vendor in Lashibi, Accra, resulted in the death of a suspected armed robber.

The vendor was allegedly attacked on July 3, 2026, while driving home from work with GH140,000 in cash by two armed persons on a motorbike, according to a news statement issued by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs.

According to initial investigations, the suspects fired at the victim’s car, causing damage to the front windscreen and right rear tyre.

According to the statement, the suspects tried to escape after stealing the money, but the complainant stopped them.

“After the suspects had snatched the complainant’s bag containing GH₵140,000.00 and were attempting to escape on their motorbike, the complainant fired at them, and one of the suspects died at the scene,” the police stated.

However, the second suspect left the stolen money behind and ran away from the scene.

The complainant “did not sustain any injuries” during the event, according to police, and the bag holding the GH₵140,000 was later found.

An AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines containing 55 rounds of ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of live ammunition, GH₵3,000 in cash, a Samsung cell phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, 46, were found during a search of the deceased suspect.

Investigators also found two spent pistol ammunition and five spent AK-47 shells at the scene.

Since then, the Accra Regional Police Command has taken over the investigation, and the deceased suspect’s body has been placed at the Police Hospital mortuary for identification, autopsy, and preservation.

According to the Ghana Police Service, efforts are being made to apprehend the fugitive accomplice, and they are requesting help from the public.

The statement continued, “The Accra Regional Police Command assures the public of its commitment to combating violent crime and urges anyone with information that may assist in the arrest of the fleeing suspect to report to the nearest Police Station or contact the Police through the emergency numbers 18555 or 191.”
