Eric Afoakwa, also known as “Chad,” was apprehended by the Ghana Police Service after being found guilty of several financial offences in absentia by the Accra High Court.
Afoakwa was arrested on Monday, July 6, while getting ready to depart the country, according to the police.
The Police said in a Facebook statement that Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), ordered the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit to conduct the operation.
In 2019, the Accra High Court found Afoakwa guilty on five out of six allegations, which included tax evasion, money laundering, forging official papers, and defrauding by false pretences.
Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa, the trial judge, gave him a concurrent sentence of eight years in prison and mandated that he reimburse the complainant $132,660.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) declared Afoakwa sought and asked the public for information on his location after he allegedly went into hiding after the conviction.
According to the police, he will be turned over to EOCO to help enforce the court’s ruling.
The Service further stated that it is still dedicated to collaborating with pertinent state agencies to guarantee that fugitives are apprehended and subjected to the full force of the law.
