The competition to succeed Chairman Wontumi as NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman has already started, with two individuals emerging as the front-runners.
Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence.
The most well-known candidate is Henry Kwabena Kokofu, a former member of parliament for Bantama and former CEO of the Environmental Protection Agency.
He will be examined with Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, the former chairman of the Afigya Kwabre South constituency.
Twenty candidates were approved to run for six executive positions in the next Ashanti Regional elections after the NPP conducted a screening process on Monday, July 20, 2026, at the Hasta Hotel in Kumasi.
The most competitive positions are those for Nasara Coordinator, Youth Organiser, and First Vice Chairman, each of which has four approved candidates.
The positions of Treasurer and Second Vice Chairman will be contested by three candidates each, but the position of Communication Officer will only be contested by two.
On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the vetting committee will begin screening again.
Fifteen more candidates are seeking approval for the remaining five roles, which include Regional Chairman, Secretary, Organiser, and Women’s Organiser.
