The late American actor Chadwick Boseman’s widow is being sued by his brothers for how she handled his multimillion-dollar estate.
Derrick and Kevin Boseman have petitioned a Los Angeles court to remove Taylor Simone Ledward, the widow of the Black Panther actor, from her position as controller of his estate and to compel her to give money to family members.
They contend that she “cannot be trusted with the continued administration of the estate” due to her improper handling of the money distribution.
In 2020, Boseman passed away at the age of 43, four years after receiving a colon cancer diagnosis.
His most well-known performance was as T’Challa, the king of Wakanda, in the 2018 Marvel blockbuster Black Panther, which won an Oscar.
Boseman had assets valued at $3.8 million (£2.9 million), according to court documents obtained by BBC News, but he passed away without a will.
A court determined that Boseman’s widow, who was also named administrator of the estate, should receive half of it, while each of his parents would receive 25%.
On behalf of their parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, the actor’s brothers submitted the court plea last week.
Ledward “has still not distributed the estate” and “continues to exert unilateral control” over the estate, according to the petition.
Additionally, Ledward is charged with maintaining a “lack of transparency” regarding his holdings and keeping the actor’s parents “in the dark” regarding the transactions and activities of a business that was established to oversee his rights and image.
Ledward’s “misconduct is causing ongoing harm” and depriving Boseman’s parents “of financial assets at a vulnerable age when such support is most critical,” according to the brothers.
“Moreover, the needless continuation of these proceedings denies Decedent’s [Boseman’s] family closure and causes emotional distress,” the court statement added.
“Imagine flipping through the channels and stumbling on a film starring your deceased son or brother, knowing that someone you do not know or trust is profiting from his image without your input or consent.”
R&B musician Ledward, who goes by Sahn, began dating Boseman in 2015. The two were married, six days before the actor passed away in August 2020.
