The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), in collaboration with the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council (GRTCC), has welcomed the Government of Ghana’s decision to reduce the regulatory margin on diesel by GH¢2.00 per litre, a measure that took effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and will remain in force for one month.
The transport operators expressed appreciation to the government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, for responding to concerns raised by the transport sector over the rising cost of fuel and its impact on public transportation.
According to the leadership of the GPRTU and GRTCC, they held discussions with the Minister responsible for the transport sector, highlighting the financial challenges faced by commercial drivers and requesting urgent government intervention. They noted that the successful engagement resulted in the fuel price reduction, providing much-needed relief to transport operators nationwide.
The unions also appealed to the government to consider extending the diesel price intervention beyond the initial one-month period if global crude oil prices continue to increase, in order to protect both transport operators and passengers from higher transportation costs.
Following consultations with national executives and key stakeholders, the GPRTU and GRTCC announced that transport fares across Ghana will remain unchanged until further notice. The unions stressed that there will be no adjustment to the current approved transport fare structure despite market uncertainties.
Commercial drivers, station masters, and branch executives have been directed to strictly adhere to the officially approved transport fares. The unions warned that no operator is permitted to impose unauthorized charges on passengers.
Passengers who are asked to pay fares above the approved rates have been encouraged to report such incidents to the nearest GPRTU office for immediate investigation and appropriate action.
The decision is expected to bring relief to commuters while ensuring stability in Ghana’s public transport sector amid ongoing fuel price developments.
