Fuel prices in Ghana are expected to increase from Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with petrol projected to rise to an average of GH¢16.26 per litre, according to the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC).
COPEC estimates that the price of petrol could increase by 4.24%, from the current average of GH¢15.60 per litre to GH¢16.26.
Diesel is expected to record a more significant increase of 10.23%, with the average price projected to rise from GH¢17.30 to GH¢19.07 per litre.
International Crude Oil Prices Drive Fuel Increase
COPEC attributed the expected fuel price increase in Ghana mainly to a sharp rise in international crude oil prices and the cost of refined petroleum products on the global market.
The petroleum consumers’ group said the international price of crude oil increased from $89.30 to $103.07 per barrel during the latest pricing window.
Meanwhile, the international Free-On-Board (FOB) price of petrol increased by 10.08%, moving from $1,136.50 to $1,251.07 per metric tonne.
Diesel also recorded a substantial increase in its international FOB price, rising by 12.33% from $1,250.50 to $1,404.73 per metric tonne.
Ghana Cedi Records Marginal Appreciation
Despite the pressure from higher global petroleum prices, the Ghana cedi recorded a marginal appreciation against the US dollar during the pricing period.
COPEC reported that the average interbank exchange rate improved by 0.29%, moving from GH¢11.5166 to GH¢11.4830 per US dollar.
LPG Price Also Expected to Increase
The projected increase is not limited to petrol and diesel. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is also expected to become more expensive, with COPEC forecasting a price of approximately GH¢15.32 per kilogramme.
The expected LPG price adjustment follows a 16.45% increase in its international FOB price.
The latest projections are expected to put further pressure on motorists, households and businesses that rely heavily on petroleum products, particularly as changes in global crude oil prices, refined fuel costs and exchange rates continue to influence fuel prices in Ghana.
