Ghanaian-owned agricultural and agroforestry company Afarinick Company Limited (ACL) has entered into a strategic partnership with Japan-based Meiji Co. Ltd. to develop a sustainable and circular agroforestry cocoa farming model in Ghana.
The partnership was formalised through the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) in Accra on Monday, September 14, 2026. The agreement forms part of activities commemorating 100 years of Meiji Milk Chocolate and the Japanese company’s longstanding relationship with Ghana.
The Letter of Intent was signed by Afarinick Executive Chairman Joe Forson and Meiji President and Representative Director Bunjiro Yao.
Under the agreement, Afarinick and Meiji will explore the joint development of an agroforestry cocoa farm in Ghana, with a strong focus on sustainable agricultural practices and environmental restoration.
A major component of the initiative will be the productive use of farm waste. The companies intend to incorporate agricultural waste into the farming system as part of a circular approach that can improve resource efficiency and support sustainable cocoa production.
The partnership is expected to contribute to Ghana’s efforts to promote climate-smart agriculture, sustainable cocoa farming, agroforestry development and environmental restoration, while strengthening collaboration between Ghanaian and Japanese businesses.
The initiative also highlights the growing importance of sustainable cocoa production in Ghana, particularly through farming systems that combine cocoa cultivation with environmental conservation and more efficient use of agricultural resources.
