Former Energy Minister and former Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has expressed confidence in Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP ahead of the 2028 Ghana presidential election.

Dr Opoku Prempeh, who served as Dr Bawumia’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election, said Ghanaian voters would ultimately determine the outcome of the next general election.

Speaking to JoyNews on the sidelines of the NPP National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, NAPO noted that elections in Ghana have historically been highly competitive.

He said the decision on who will lead Ghana from 2029 would rest with the electorate, as voters assess the various presidential candidates and their proposed direction for the country.

According to NAPO, he personally believes Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP will emerge as the choice of voters in the 2028 presidential election.

NAPO Declares No Interest in NPP Leadership Contest

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh also distanced himself from the ongoing NPP national leadership elections, saying he has no personal interest in determining the outcome of the contest.

He maintained that the decision on who should occupy the party’s national executive positions belongs to the delegates participating in the election.

His comments come as the NPP holds its National Delegates Conference and national officers’ elections at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
