Family members, political figures, sympathisers and other mourners have gathered at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka, Accra, to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
The memorial service celebrated her life, contributions to Ghana and lasting legacy. Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang attended the ceremony alongside members of the late former First Lady’s family, political associates and other dignitaries.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who died at the age of 76 at Ridge Hospital in Accra, served as Ghana’s First Lady during two periods: from June 4 to September 24, 1979, and from December 31, 1981, to January 7, 2001.
Priest Urges Ghanaians to Embrace Humility and Selfless Service
Delivering a message during the memorial Mass, Assistant Priest of the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Rev. Fr. Michael Dziwornu Etsey, encouraged Ghanaians to make meaningful use of their lives by serving others with humility, patience, kindness and compassion.
He explained that the anniversary was not only an occasion to celebrate Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ life and achievements but also an opportunity for people to reflect on their personal values and the legacy they intend to leave behind.
According to the priest, memorial services should inspire people to learn from the lives of the departed and appreciate the importance of their contributions to society.
He urged Christians to demonstrate humility, gentleness, patience and love in their daily activities, regardless of their social status or professional responsibilities.
Rev. Fr. Etsey stressed that leadership should be centred on service, noting that public officials, religious leaders and parents all have a responsibility to improve the lives of those around them.
Parents and Leaders Encouraged to Practise Patience
The priest also advised parents to raise their children with patience and gentleness, warning that uncontrolled anger and harsh language could damage relationships and create divisions within families.
He encouraged mourners to consider practical ways of contributing to their families, communities and the development of Ghana.
He added that a meaningful life is built through everyday acts of kindness, responsible leadership and a willingness to support others.
Rev. Fr. Etsey further urged the congregation to draw inspiration from Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ life and reflect on the lessons her legacy offers future generations.
Prayers Offered for Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings
The memorial Mass concluded with prayers for the eternal repose of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ soul and those of other departed persons.
The gathering served as a moment of remembrance for the former First Lady, bringing together family members, political representatives and sympathisers to honour her memory while reflecting on the values of service, compassion and responsible leadership.
