The Ghana Police Service has confirmed a road accident involving police vehicles and a motorcyclist near the National Theatre in Ridge, Accra, but has denied allegations that the victim was abandoned at the scene without medical assistance.
According to the Police Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, the civilian motorcyclist was knocked down during the incident on Wednesday and was immediately transported to Ridge Hospital for medical treatment.
The police said the incident involved service vehicle SV No. 115 and another vehicle belonging to the National Protection Unit (NPU). The officers involved were reportedly undertaking an important assignment at the time of the accident.
The police issued the clarification following a Facebook publication by journalist Umaru Sanda Amadu, which alleged that officers involved in the crash had failed to take the injured motorcyclist to hospital.
However, preliminary investigations by the police indicated that the assigned service driver conveyed the victim to Ridge Hospital, where he received treatment before being discharged.
The police further disclosed that the victim confirmed receiving medical attention and stated that the officers involved had paid his medical bills. He is reportedly recovering at home while continuing to take his prescribed medication.
The Ghana Police Service said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident and determine whether further action would be necessary.
The incident has drawn attention to police conduct, road safety, emergency medical assistance and accountability involving security personnel in Ghana.
