Concerns over the Democracy Hub group’s planned demonstration at the Jubilee House prompted the Police to meet with some of its leaders today, September 22, 2023, at the request of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

In the meeting, the Police reiterated that the Service has a history of providing security for demonstrations and is not opposed to any individual or group that wishes to demonstrate. However, in this particular case, the Police were concerned about the intended demonstration’s location, the Jubilee House, which is a designated security zone.

The group’s leaders promised the Police during the meeting that they would talk with their followers about a potential compromise for the demonstration’s location and then go back to the Police.

The leaders also gave the Police assurances that they would urge their followers to vacate the streets as they awaited either a settlement between the Police and the protesters on a different location or the court’s ruling on the case.

According to police documents, it was determined at the conference that there is no information or documented instance of an assault against the demonstrators. Anyone possessing contradictory evidence should therefore present it to the investigator.

“We want to reassure the public that the Police Service is committed to upholding citizens’ rights in a democratic society while preserving the safety and stability of the country.”
