William Atuguba, a former justice of Ghana’s Supreme Court, has emphasized the need of preserving the democracy in the nation.
On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, the former Supreme Court judge participated in a public lecture and panel discussion at the Kofi Drah Conference Centre of the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana.
The focus of the occasion was on the judiciary’s contribution to maintaining the nation’s democracy.
The retired Supreme Court judge demanded during his speech that the Ghanaian constitution be immediately reviewed since it was insufficient. He singled out as issues that require attention the designation of four presidential representatives to the judicial council and the custom of selecting ministers from members of parliament.
Justice Atuguba used the opportunity to applaud political activists and civil society organizations in the nation for their work in advancing democracy and good governance in addition to criticizing the constitution.
He acknowledged the contributions made to the democratic process by people like Kevin Taylor and Professor Gyampo by mentioning their names.
But regardless of whose political party is in charge, he urged these activists and groups to continue their campaign. He emphasized the significance of keeping all political parties responsible and making sure that the fundamentals of democracy are always preserved.
The ongoing discussions and debates in Ghana about governance and the rule of law are highlighted by Justice Atuguba’s request for a constitutional review and his acknowledgment of the function of civil society in defending democracy.
