The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has rejected charges that one of its national service employees stole GH¢308,000, calling them false and deceptive.

The Authority stated in a statement on July 7 that it had received a media report alleging that a DVLA employee had stolen GH¢308,000 to buy a 50-inch Samsung television, a Hyundai Elantra saloon car, and to cover a sibling’s tuition.

The money at the center of the investigation does not belong to the Authority and was not taken from any of its accounts, the DVLA explained.

“The Authority wishes to categorically state that the alleged GH¢308,000 involved in the matter does not belong to the DVLA and was not stolen from the Authority or any of its accounts,” the statement said.

The Authority claims that the issue being looked into is a private disagreement involving a person who is under contract with the DVLA as a National Service Person.

It emphasised that the Authority has never experienced any financial loss related to the case.

The Authority maintained that the claimed violation is unrelated to its operations, finances, or official actions and instead relates to a disagreement between two private persons, even though it confirmed that the person is affiliated with the DVLA.

“The alleged offence is not connected to the operations, finances or official activities of the Authority but rather two different individuals. It is therefore inaccurate and misleading to portray the incident in a manner that suggests the Authority was the victim of the alleged theft,” the statement added.

The DVLA expressed trust in the legal system’s due process and reiterated its dedication to maintaining the highest levels of accountability and integrity.

Additionally, it gave the public assurances that it would fully cooperate with the Ghana Police Service in the event that it was needed to support ongoing investigations.
