The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has reiterated its September 12, 2026 deadline for individuals, businesses, landowners and other users occupying or conducting unauthorised activities within high-voltage transmission line Right-of-Way (RoW) areas across Ghana to vacate.
GRIDCo warned that once the deadline expires, it will collaborate with relevant government and statutory institutions to enforce the law and remove all unauthorised structures and activities from electricity transmission corridors.
The latest warning comes after GRIDCo completed emergency works to replace a damaged transmission tower along the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line at Ashaiman.
The company confirmed that electricity supply has been fully restored to communities and other areas in the Greater Accra Region that were affected by the maintenance works.
GRIDCo expressed gratitude to residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation during the project, which resulted in 15-hour power outages over two consecutive weekends as engineers worked to replace the damaged tower.
The transmission tower was damaged after a tanker reportedly crashed into it, raising renewed concerns about encroachment on power transmission lines and electricity infrastructure.
GRIDCo Warns Against Power Line Encroachment
GRIDCo has stressed that unauthorised activities within transmission line Right-of-Way corridors pose serious risks to public safety, electricity supply and the reliability of Ghana’s national power transmission system.
The company cited the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), as amended by L.I. 1737 of 2004, which restrict several activities within designated transmission corridors.
Prohibited activities include unauthorised construction, excavation, drilling, commercial operations, lorry parks, shops, garages and other developments that could obstruct the safe operation, inspection and maintenance of electricity transmission infrastructure.
GRIDCo also referenced a directive from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, instructing individuals, businesses, land users and other entities occupying transmission line Rights-of-Way to stop unauthorised activities and vacate the affected areas within one month.
The September 12 deadline therefore serves as a final reminder to all affected persons to comply with the directive and help protect Ghana’s power transmission infrastructure, public safety and reliable electricity supply.
