Parliament is set to resume proceedings today, Monday, August 24, 2026, following a special recall by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to allow lawmakers to deliberate on urgent parliamentary business.
The five-day parliamentary sitting will continue through Friday, August 28, at Parliament House in Accra. Proceedings are scheduled to begin at 12 noon today.
Speaker Bagbin issued the recall on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, under Order 58(4) of the Standing Orders of Parliament. Although the Speaker did not disclose the specific issues to be addressed, the special sitting comes as several ministerial nominations submitted by President John Dramani Mahama remain pending before the House.
Among the key nominations is that of Klottey Korle Member of Parliament, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, who has been nominated as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology following the death of the former substantive minister, Murtala Mohammed.
President Mahama has also nominated Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. The President has further reassigned two other ministers to new portfolios as part of changes within his administration.
The ministerial nominations were officially submitted to Parliament on Friday, August 7, in line with Article 78(1) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. The provision requires presidential nominees for ministerial positions to receive parliamentary approval before assuming office.
Parliament is therefore expected to take up the nominations during the special sitting. The process is likely to include parliamentary vetting, consideration of the nominees’ qualifications and subsequent decisions on whether to approve or reject their appointments.
The return of Parliament is expected to attract significant public attention as lawmakers consider the latest ministerial appointments and other urgent government business.
