The Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) is taking steps to expand beyond primary aluminium production with plans to establish a continuous casting and rolling mill to manufacture aluminium rods for Ghana’s electrical cable industry and potentially serve international markets.

The proposed facility is expected to support Ghana’s aluminium value chain development by enabling the country to produce more intermediate aluminium products locally. This could help downstream manufacturers access locally produced raw materials while reducing dependence on imported aluminium inputs.

The initiative is also expected to contribute to industrial development, local manufacturing and value addition within Ghana’s aluminium sector. By processing aluminium into products such as rods for electrical cables, VALCO aims to retain a greater share of the economic value generated from Ghana’s aluminium resources.

The development was disclosed by VALCO Finance Director Sepenu Agbetsise during the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ mid-year performance review and training programme held at the Marriott Hotel in Accra.

The planned aluminium rod production project could create new opportunities for Ghana’s electrical cable manufacturing industry while strengthening linkages between the country’s mining, aluminium processing and manufacturing sectors.

If successfully implemented, the initiative could also position Ghana to increase its participation in regional and international aluminium markets through the export of value-added aluminium products rather than relying primarily on raw or primary aluminium production.
