New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reaffirmed the party’s determination to regain political power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.

Dr Bawumia said the NPP’s ongoing internal reorganisation is a major part of efforts to rebuild the party’s grassroots structures, strengthen its leadership and position the party for victory in the next general election.

He made the remarks on Sunday, August 16, 2026, when he addressed newly elected Greater Accra Regional NPP executives following the party’s regional executive elections held on August 15.

The former Vice President urged the newly elected regional executives to take their responsibilities seriously and actively contribute to the party’s reorganisation agenda.

According to Dr Bawumia, the recent regional elections should not be regarded as the end of the NPP’s internal activities. Rather, they form part of a wider restructuring process designed to create a stronger and more effective political organisation ahead of the 2028 Ghana elections.

“The goal for all of us is to win the 2028 election. This is just a stepping stone towards winning 2028,” Dr Bawumia said.

He noted that the NPP has already completed elections at the polling station, electoral area, constituency and regional levels as part of its comprehensive internal reorganisation.

The process, he explained, will reach another major milestone with the NPP national executive elections scheduled for October 10, 2026.

Dr Bawumia expressed confidence that completing the internal elections would give the NPP a stronger organisational structure and provide the foundation needed to campaign effectively for victory in 2028.

He said there is still significant work ahead and called on the new executives to focus on rebuilding the party, strengthening its structures and reconnecting with supporters at the grassroots level.

NPP Executives Urged to Treat Their Positions as a Responsibility

Dr Bawumia also reminded the newly elected regional executives that their victories should not be viewed merely as political achievements.

He said their new positions come with significant responsibilities, particularly as the NPP works to reposition itself ahead of the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The NPP flagbearer therefore encouraged the executives to remain committed to the party’s reorganisation programme and work collectively to build a stronger political organisation capable of returning the party to government.
