President John Dramani Mahama has granted a presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons as part of activities commemorating Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, October 5, 2026, a total of 819 beneficiaries were first-time offenders and have been granted outright release.
The presidential clemency also covers 13 inmates aged 70 years and above, as well as six prisoners suffering from serious illnesses, who have equally been granted outright release.
As part of the decision, 11 death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment, while the sentences of six persons serving life imprisonment have been reduced to 20 years.
Two additional individuals have also received outright release following special recommendations submitted for consideration.
The Presidency said the decision was made in accordance with Article 72(1) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State.
The presidential pardon forms part of activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary and is intended to provide an opportunity for mercy, compassion and national reflection.
The statement further explained that the exercise considered three petitions and three additional cases, bringing the total number of beneficiaries under the presidential clemency programme to 863.
Relevant government institutions have been directed to take the necessary measures to implement President Mahama’s decision and facilitate the release or adjustment of sentences for the affected persons.
Ghana is scheduled to commemorate its 70th Independence Anniversary on March 6, 2027.
The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
