The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has announced that it will assess allegations of extortion and related conduct made against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.
In a public notice issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, the OSP said it had taken note of the allegations and would conduct an assessment to determine whether the matter falls within its legal mandate.
The anti-corruption agency explained that the assessment will also establish whether there are sufficient grounds for further investigative action.
OSP Receives Petitions Over Afenyo-Markin Allegations
The OSP disclosed that it has acknowledged a joint petition submitted by two individuals, alongside two separate petitions from other persons regarding the allegations involving the Minority Leader.
The development means the allegations are currently at the preliminary assessment stage, with the OSP examining the available information before deciding on the next steps.
The assessment is being conducted in accordance with Regulation 5 of L.I. 2374, which provides the legal framework for the preliminary handling of matters brought before the Special Prosecutor.
OSP to Determine Next Steps
The OSP’s latest position does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing against Afenyo-Markin. Rather, the office is expected to determine whether the allegations meet the requirements for its statutory jurisdiction and whether a formal investigation should follow.
The case could attract further public attention as the OSP reviews the extortion allegations involving Sammy Gyamfi and Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The development also comes amid heightened public and political discussions over GoldBod, parliamentary accountability, alleged financial misconduct and Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.
