Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed support for Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and urged the NPP Parliamentary Minority to remain focused on the reported $1.7 billion financial loss linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Afenyo-Markin disclosed that Dr Bawumia gave the advice during a meeting at his private residence in Accra on Monday, August 24, 2026, ahead of Parliament’s emergency sitting.

The discussions reportedly covered developments within the NPP, as well as key issues expected to form part of the Minority Caucus’ agenda when Parliament resumes.

Bawumia Calls for Accountability Over GoldBod Loss

According to Afenyo-Markin, Dr Bawumia encouraged the Minority to continue demanding answers over the reported losses associated with the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Afenyo-Markin said the reported loss exceeds $1.7 billion, an amount he described as equivalent to approximately 1.5% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Minority Leader said Dr Bawumia also expressed confidence in his leadership and commended the Minority Caucus for its efforts to promote financial accountability and transparency regarding the programme.

NPP Minority to Use Parliament to Seek Answers

Dr Bawumia reportedly urged the Minority to rely on the rules and procedures of Parliament to scrutinise the government’s handling of the reported financial losses and demand accountability from the relevant institutions.

Afenyo-Markin assured the former Vice President that the issue would remain a major priority for the Minority when Parliament resumes.

He described the matter as a national responsibility, stressing that the Minority would pursue it in the interest of Ghanaian taxpayers and the wider public.

The Effutu MP further stated that the Minority would continue pressing for clarification until Ghanaians receive satisfactory answers concerning the reported GoldBod financial losses and the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

The development is expected to intensify parliamentary scrutiny of GoldBod, the Bank of Ghana, Ghana’s gold purchase programme and public financial management as lawmakers return to business.
