The government has reviewed the motorbike riding restrictions in Bawku Municipality and surrounding communities in Ghana’s Upper East Region, allowing residents to ride motorcycles during specified daytime hours.
The Minister for the Interior, acting on the advice of the National Security Council and through an Executive Instrument, announced that the revised motorcycle restrictions will take effect on Monday, August 25, 2026.
Under the new directive, both men and women are permitted to ride motorbikes from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily within Bawku Municipality and its environs.
However, the existing Bawku curfew remains in force from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Residents are expected to comply fully with the security measures during the restricted hours.
The government has also maintained a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition and offensive weapons within Bawku Municipality and the affected areas. Anyone found possessing firearms, ammunition or other prohibited weapons risks arrest and prosecution.
Authorities have urged traditional leaders, elders, opinion leaders, youth groups and residents of Bawku to remain calm and exercise restraint as efforts continue to address the security challenges in the area.
The government further encouraged residents to embrace peaceful and non-violent means of resolving disagreements and contributing to lasting peace and stability in the Bawku Municipality.
