The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has postponed the previously planned date of January 20, 2024 for the holding of parliamentary primaries in seats where current members of parliament are present to January 27, 2024.

Following a meeting of the National Executive Council on Wednesday, December 6, the Party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, made the announcement.

Additionally, the NPP declared that until the 2024 budget is approved, campaigning in these constituencies would not take place.

On December 2, the ruling party selected parliamentary candidates in orphan constituencies, which were under the control of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In addition, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the Party, has asked to select his running mate on a different date than December 6, 2023. The NPP’s Constitution states in Article 13 that the Flagbearer must reveal his running companion 12 months before to the general elections.

Given that the 2024 elections are precisely twelve months away on December 7, 2023, the NPP’s National Executive Council was required to discuss potential candidates on December 6. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, however, asked for an extension of time so that he could confer with more people before choosing his running mate.

A new date for the announcement of the running mate will be announced shortly. The Council has granted Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s request.

The NPP’s determination to uphold a democratic process in choosing its candidates is demonstrated by the decision to rearrange the date of the parliamentary primary in constituencies where sitting members of parliament are present as well as by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s request for an extension of time.
