Samuel A. Jinapor, MP, the Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, is the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) unopposed parliamentary candidate in the Damongo Constituency for the second time in a row.
The current Member of Parliament, Mr. Jinapor, was the sole candidate to have filed a nomination at the Constituency by Monday, January 25, 2023, the closing date.
There are seven seats in the Savannah Region, one of which is the Damongo Constituency. Since the start of the Fourth Republic in 1993, the National Democratic Congress has traditionally held the constituency.
Mr. Jinapor first ran for office against Adam Mutawakilu in 2020. Adam Mutawakilu had served as a member of parliament since 2013.
Pundits were taken aback when Mr. Jinapor, a member of the New Patriotic Party, unexpectedly emerged victorious in the elections, garnering more than half (54%) of the legitimate votes cast. This made him the party’s first MP for the constituency since the Fourth Republic’s founding.
President Akufo-Addo selected him as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources after his election, a role he has continued to hold.
The NPP began accepting nominations on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, for constituencies where members of parliament are currently in office.
Numerous individuals have put in nominations to challenge sitting members of parliament around the nation; however, certain traditional leaders and other stakeholders have come out to demand that specific MPs be protected.
But in Mr. Jinapor’s situation, he didn’t need party heavyweights and conventional leaders to ask for protection.
The only candidate to file to run as the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate at the close of nominations on Monday, December 25, 2023, was Mr. Jinapor.
Following the submission of his nomination, Mr. Jinapor expressed his humility at the party’s faith in him inside the constituency.
He claimed that breaking the eight would need winning the Damongo Constituency, which is a highly important seat.
In order to secure the NPP’s seat in Parliament and bring victory to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, he vowed to collaborate with the party and the voters.
The date of the NPP’s parliamentary primary is set for Saturday, January 27, 2023.
The NPP MPs on this list have decided not to run for office again.
