The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a defeat when they drew 2-2 with The Mambas of Mozambique at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium for the second time in the competition during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage.
Jordan Ayew, a winger for Crystal Palace, scored twice from the penalty spot just before halftime, but Ghana gave up a late lead, culminating in a 2-2 draw.
Due to the result, Ghana finishes the group stage with two points, which is traditionally a risky position for teams hoping to advance among the top four third-place teams.
With Jordan Ayew’s penalty goals, Ghana appeared to be headed for the round of sixteen at first. But Ghana ran into trouble when The Mambas increased their pressure late in the second half.
The game changed when Mozambique’s Geny Catama scored from the penalty kick after captain Andre Ayew was judged to have handled the ball in the penalty box.
Mozambique’s equalizer came from a corner kick, given after goalie Richard Ofori strangely handled a wayward shot. In the fourth minute of additional time, Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo Mandava, who was also involved in the earlier penalty incident, came up highest to head the ball past Ofori.
Ghana now has to figure out how to get through the knockout stage with just two points from the group stage.
