Professor of political science at Cape Coast University (UCC) in the Central Region, Mr. Jonathan Asante Okyere, has charged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with sowing discord within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in advance of the party’s conference to choose a candidate for the 2024 general elections.

Hopeson Adorye, a former NPP candidate for the Greater Accra Region’s Kpone Katamanso Constituency, claims his employment with this government was terminated as a result of his public endorsement of Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten as the party’s next flagbearer.

Mr. Hopeson went on Oman FM in Accra to say that he wouldn’t be discouraged by the attacks but that he would do everything he could to bring Alan to power.

Political science lecturer Mr. Asante Okyere responded to the news of the dismissal by claiming that it is a covert acknowledgment by the president that he is backing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

On Monday, November 28, 2022, he said that the president had sowed discord and animosity inside the NPP. He made this accusation on the mid-day news segment on Accra 100.5 FM.

He claims that although some ministers and deputy ministers have publicly said that they support the Vice President, nothing has been done to them.

He asked, “If these men and women are still working at their posts, why fire Hopeson Adorye?”

He disclosed that if every supporter of Alan in his government chooses to come out in the open, the president will face an impossible task.

He said that Alan might not have the backing of the establishment but did have the support of the people, so the president should be cautious about some of these government actions.

He emphasized that Mr. Adorye’s dismissal is proof the vice president has the president’s support.
