The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry has announced ambitious plans to overhaul Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector through the PharmaVax Programme, which aims to strengthen governance, improve investment conditions, and increase market access for local firms.

The initiative is based on four main pillars, according to the Ministry:

1. strengthening governance institutions within the pharmaceutical sector.

2. Enhancing public-private dialogue between government and industry players.

3. Improving the environment for foreign direct investment and trade.

4. Promoting greater transparency in investment conditions and authorization processes.

On behalf of Hon. Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Director of Administration Mr. Yaw Sakyi stated at a meeting in Accra on Thursday, June 25, 2026, that the government is dedicated to making Ghana the sub-region’s center for pharmaceutical manufacturing and that the pharmaceutical policy will, among other things, provide the implementation systems required for the industry’s expansion.

He expressed gratitude to the German Ministry for Economic Corporation and Development and the European Union for the 415,437.78 euros, or seventy-eight cents.

According to Mr. Godfred Gobah, Head of the Ministry’s Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Development Unit, the initiative will involve the private sector and take part in regional and global events to raise awareness of Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector and open up new market access opportunities.

According to him, the Ministry anticipates that by 2030, the program will provide a strong basis for accomplishing a number of strategic goals.

Among these are raising the market share of locally made pharmaceutical items from 30 to 60 percent and doubling the export value of pharmaceutical products within the ECOWAS market.

The Trade Ministry is attempting to create a strong ecosystem to promote the expansion of the pharmaceutical industry in partnership with GIZ Ghana, the EU, and other important stakeholders.
