In an action that marks a critical turning point in our country’s efforts to empower our youth, President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially opened the National Service Authority.
The reorganization, which was made possible by the recently passed NSS Act 1119, is a glaring example of the President’s commitment to national unity and youth development, two issues that have dominated his administration.
President Akufo-Addo has continuously worked to advance the expansion of the critical mass of youth in this nation since taking office in 2017. He believes that the energies and skills of this generation will propel Ghana’s development agenda for many years to come.
At the inauguration, he said that years of commitment to this cause have culminated in the National Service Scheme’s development into a legitimate authority.
“It’s not by coincidence that nations around the world, being United States of America, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Japan, or our neighbours in Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, and Kenya have implemented national or youth service programs as strategic tools for development, he added.
He claimed that Ghana’s National Service Program has been crucial to the country’s development path because it gives young people the chance to contribute to the socioeconomic development of their nation while also instilling in them a sense of civic duty, responsibility, and patriotism.
The Scheme has made a substantial contribution to the construction of infrastructure in the areas of health, education, agriculture, and local government in addition to promoting national cohesion. “Each year, some one hundred and fifty thousand graduates are deployed with some fifty thousand serving in the education sector alone.”
He went on to say that this outstanding contribution not only helps us reach our national development goals, but it also saves the country almost three billion cedis a year in pay costs.
The President claims that the new act’s creation of the National Service Authority turns the program into an authority and prepares it to play an even bigger role in the development of the country.
By taking this action, the authority guarantees that, in addition to mobilizing and deploying service members, it will also provide them with marketable skills and set them up for success in their post-service lives.
Insha Allah, my Vice President and the NPP’s outstanding presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will lead the next administration, which I am confident will build on this foundation and see to it that the national service authority remains a catalyst for the advancement of our youth and the country as a whole.
In closing, he expressed confidence that the nation’s continued progress would be based on the abilities, inventiveness, and creative potential of the youth, and that the National Service Authority would play a pivotal role in nurturing this potential and working with important institutions to bring in the human capital required for Ghana’s socioeconomic transformation.
