Mohammed Ibrahim, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sowutuom Branch Organiser and self-declared leader of a revolutionary outfit called Kanawu (“Speak and Die”), has been given a 10-year prison sentence.

Her Honor After Ibrahim was found guilty of disseminating false information, threatening harm, and engaging in offensive behavior that contributed to a breach of the peace, Circuit Court 10 in Accra’s Evelyn E. Asamoah imposed the punishment.

In a video that went viral on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok on September 3, 2024, Ibrahim, wearing a red military beret, claimed that the Ghana Police Service had recruited phony officers on the orders of Interior Minister Hon. Henry Quartey and Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

He claimed that during the general elections on December 7, these recruits were being prepared to hurt citizens.

By revealing his knowledge of Hon. Quartey’s home and threatening to use violence, the NDC organizer intensified his rhetoric, declaring, “At the outbreak of war in Ghana, we will shoot him.”

The Ghana Police Service acted quickly in response to the video, announcing Ibrahim’s wanted status on September 10.

Soon later, he was arrested, and the red beret seen in the video was found by the authorities.

On September 13, he was arraigned before the Circuit Court and charged with: Threatening harm (Section 74 of Act 29); publishing false information with the intention of frightening and alarming the public (Section 208 of Act 29); and engaging in offensive behavior that could lead to a breach of the peace (Section 207 of Act 29).

He entered a not guilty plea to every accusation.

The viral video was among the ten exhibits that the prosecutors offered as evidence, along with three witnesses.

On November 5, Ibrahim brought three witnesses and testified in his defense after it was decided that there was a prima facie case against him.

Her Honour Evelyn E. Asamoah found him guilty of all charges in her November 29 ruling.

Ibrahim was sentenced by the court to three years in prison for publishing false information, four years in prison for threatening damage, and three years in prison for insulting behavior.
