A major turning point in Ghana’s democratic history is approaching as the country moves from the Eighth to the Ninth Parliament.
Articles 112(4) and 113(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which state that the Eighth Parliament would be dissolved and the Ninth Parliament will be sworn in on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, serve as the foundation for this transition.
The nation has proven its dedication to democratic values by successfully navigating seven parliamentary transitions since the Fourth Republic, according to Madam Gifty Twum Ampofo, Chairperson for the Dissolution and Inauguration Planning Committee, who spoke to the Parliamentary Press Corps in Parliament on Thursday ahead of the inauguration of the Ninth Parliament and the swearing-in of the president-elect.
According to her, the impending change offered a chance for introspection, revitalization, and reaffirmation of Ghana’s democratic principles.
The new Speaker of Parliament will be elected on Monday, January 6, 2025, Madam Twum Ampofo informed the press.
“This election will set the tone for legislative leadership in the coming days,” she stated.
She also described the Eighth Parliament’s dissolution and the swearing-in of the new MPs-elect, which were set for Monday, January 6 from 2300 to midnight.
The Committee Chairperson informed the press that the presidential inauguration, which is set for Tuesday, January 7, 2025, will honor Ghana’s lasting democratic values and usher in a new era of governance.
In his speech, Mr. Camillo Pwamang, Deputy Coordinator, Dissolution and Inauguration Committee, stated that accountability and transparency were essential as Ghana made the transition.
“The media plays a vital role in bridging the gap between the institution of parliament and the people, promoting understanding, unity, and accountability,” he stated.
He urged the media to work together and be dedicated to helping Ghana build on its past successes and tackle urgent problems including infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and economic growth.
