Political Parties Join Forces to Oppose Chief Justice Suspension and Illegal Terminations in Accra, Ghana

On Monday, May 5, 2025, a number of political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and Ghana Union Movement (GUM), will hold a nationwide demonstration in support of Ghana’s constitutional order and unity.

Concerns about the termination of appointments and the Chief Justice’s illegal suspension are the reasons for the protest.

The parties see this action as a challenge to the independence of the judiciary and a danger to Ghanaian democracy.

The parties pointed to previous attempts by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to intimidate the judiciary, including an unsuccessful attempt to depose former Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood in 2010.

They contend that a broader plan to influence the judiciary is behind the Chief Justice’s current suspension.

Concerns were also raised by the parties about possible attempts to remove the Electoral Commission Chairperson and her aides, which may open the door for political control of important institutions.

They cautioned that this might result in a constitutional interpretation that would allow former President John Mahama to run for a third term in the 2028 elections.

All Ghanaians are being urged by the parties to participate in the demonstration and protect the nation’s democracy.

They stress that the future of Ghana and the preservation of its constitutional system are at stake in this battle.

The protest seeks to uphold democracy, advance justice, and safeguard judicial independence.

The parties call on people to resist what they see to be the deterioration of democratic principles and the emergence of authoritarianism.
