The House will meet again on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the request of Speaker of the House Alban Bagban.

In a notice dated April 20, Mr. Bagbin said that the purpose of the recall is for the House to consider “important parliamentary matter.”

The MPs, however, are anticipated to cut their Easter break short and reconvene on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

“In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by order 42(3) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby direct that Parliament shall notwithstanding anything to the contrary, be recalled from recess to sit on Tuesday, the 2nd day of May 2023, at ten o’clock in the forenoon, at Parliament House, Accra, to consider urgent parliamentary business,” the statement said.

After passing the government’s three revenue-related bills—the Growth and Sustainability Amendment Bill, the Excise Duty Amendment Bill, and the Income Tax Amendment Bill—Parliament adjourned on March 31 for the Easter holiday.

According to the administration, this income law was necessary to enable it complete the procedures for the about $3 billion IMF contract and to boost the nation’s revenue condition.

Industry expressed serious concerns following the bill’s passage, claiming that the revenue measures may cause the nation’s economy to tank.
