Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also called Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and will be returning to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
Along with a legal team headed by former Attorney General Godfred Dame, Chairman Wontumi made an appearance at the CID Headquarters in Accra at noon on Monday, May 26, 2025.
Wontumi was warned about three accusations, according a news release signed by Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Head of the CID’s Public Affairs Unit:
1. Undertaking mining operations without a license
2. Pollution of water bodies
3. Entering a forest reserve without authorisation
According to the statement, Wontumi gave his statement, cooperated completely with authorities, and was later released on bond. As investigations proceed, he is scheduled to report to the CID on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.
The public was reassured by the police that they would notify them of any new developments in the case.
In a press conference following his questioning by the CID, Chairman Wontumi refuted claims that he was involved in illicit mining operations, or galamsey.
He claimed that in order to demonstrate to authorities that he does business lawfully, he had produced his mining license.
“I was invited by the police and charged with being involved in galamsey. I presented my licence to them to prove that I do not engage in illegal mining or galamsey. They also claimed I was working in the forest, but I told them it wasn’t me. If they have any evidence, they should show it to me,” he said.
