Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a potential flagbearer candidate for the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claims that the governing New Patriotic Party has injured him personally more than any other political party by destroying his enterprises.
As a result, he says he won’t accept funding from them in order to harm the NDC.
Dr. Duffuor’s comments come in response to allegations made by his adversaries that the NPP paid for him to run in the NDC flagbearer election in an effort to harm the NDC.
During a campaign stop in the Ashanti region, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana addressed party delegates and declared that he is a founding member of the NDC and that his goal is to strengthen the party rather than destroy it.
“Nothing can make me stop loving the NDC because I funded it, hence I’m the NDC. My banks were devastated by the NPP, and they attempted to bring down all of my enterprises. I want to let you know that I have been harmed by the NPP more than any other party member. I will never be used by the NPP to overthrow the NDC. To improve Ghana, my biggest contribution is to put the NDC back in power, Dr. Duffuor reaffirmed.
The Akufo-Addo administration brought down Dr. Duffuor’s uniBank in 2018.
During the banking crisis, the bank was placed under administration on March 20, 2018, was later placed in receivership, and was combined with four other failed banks to form the Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited.
The government asserted that the bank was insolvent at the time of its demise and that its directors and owners had carried out unauthorized loans and advances as well as unauthorized purchases of assets under the guise of connected interests.
Dr. Duffuor is pleading with NDC delegates to choose him as their flagbearer at the congress on May 13.
