Ghana has formally declared that from October 8, 2025, its Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade (FLEGT)-licensed timber will be available for purchase in Europe.

This is a significant turning point in the 16-year process to improve forest governance, guarantee the legality of timber, and advance sustainable trade.

On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, during the 13th Session of the Joint Monitoring and Review Mechanism between the Government of Ghana and the European Union (EU), Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, made the announcement.

With this achievement, Ghana becomes the first country in Africa and the second country in the world (after Indonesia) to adopt this internationally accepted licensing program.

The Minister described Ghana’s wide-ranging initiatives, which included updating forestry regulations, funding cutting-edge wood-tracking equipment, educating industry participants, and interacting with local communities.

By taking these steps, Ghana guarantees that all timber shipped satisfies the strictest legal and traceability requirements.

With a focus on President John Mahama’s “Tree for Life” Reforestation Initiative, the Minister urged the Forestry Commission to step up reforestation efforts going forward.

The goal of this flagship program is to lessen the strain on natural forests by restoring damaged areas and greatly increasing commercial tree plantations.

In his remarks, H.E. Irchad Razaaly, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, praised Ghana’s steadfast resolve.

He underlined that “a long chain of commitment, responsibility, and political support” from Ghana and the EU led to the October launch, which is more than just a date shift.

“By guaranteeing legality and sustainability, Ghanaian timber will enjoy unfettered access to the EU market of 450 million people,” he said, highlighting the enormous economic opportunity this presents.

Ghana’s status as a leader in sustainable forest management is cemented by this historic accomplishment, which opens up new avenues for trade, employment creation, and environmental preservation.
