Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claims that the NDC is not shocked that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is buying votes in advance of the Kumawu by-elections in the Ashanti Region on May 23, 2023.
He claimed that because the region was once a Convention People’s Party (CPP) constituency, the NPP has over the years neglected it. He clarified that Krobo Adusei, running for the CPP, was chosen as the region’s first Member of Parliament (MP).
He stated that contrary to popular belief, Kumawu and Mampong Constituencies have always been held by the CPP.
Although the town is in a region that is recognized as the NPP stronghold, he pointed out that it has historically been a seat for the opposition.
He claimed that NPP purposefully ignored the Kumawu region because of its turbulent past. He maintained that only the NDC brought about progress in the area during the NPP.
He said that when the NDC administration left office in 2016, a state-of-the-art hospital was almost 97% finished.
He added that some NPP members claimed the project’s location on the outskirts of the city was the cause for the party’s choice to overlook it when it first came to power.
He questioned, “Who builds a hospital in Makola?” noting that hospitals are constructed in peaceful areas to promote healing.
On Monday, February 22, 2023, Odeyeeba Kofi Essuman, host of the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM, conducted an interview with the National Chairman of the NDC.
He claimed that the Kumawu-Konongo-Kwahu (KKK) project, run by the NDC government, was responsible for bringing potable water to Kumawu.
People in the neighborhood are currently bathing in showers because of the NDC, he continued.
