Accra’s Mayor, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a GH₵500 reward for individuals who report sanitation offenders, such as those dumping waste into drains, littering, open defecation, and other illegal activities, as part of efforts to improve environmental conditions in the city.

The Mayor emphasised that the incentive, which calls for reliable proof, was intended to boost public involvement in upholding the Assembly’s bylaws and guarantee that criminals would face legal consequences.

He emphasised that collective vigilance was essential to tackling the sanitation issues facing the city and urged locals to actively participate in protecting their areas by disseminating information on such efforts.

On Wednesday, while on an inspection tour of the Kaneshie region, particularly Dzorshie Crescent, to determine the reasons behind ongoing flooding and analyse the state of main drainage channels, the mayor announced the award package.

Given that a contract has already been granted, he promised the locals an accelerated intervention to provide relief.

He noted that enormous amounts of plastics and abandoned garments had accumulated in gutters and storm drains, preventing the free flow of water, and blamed poor sanitation standards, especially the careless dumping of rubbish into drains, for the city’s frequent floods.

He claims that waste that is disposed of upstream frequently travels and chokes drainage systems elsewhere, posing a major risk to people’s lives and property.

In order to create a cleaner, safer, and more resilient city, he stressed that Accra’s progress depended on the activities of its citizens and urged greater cooperation between the Assembly and the general population.

The mayor reiterated that preventing flooding and guaranteeing public safety required a coordinated effort between officials and communities, reiterating his administration’s commitment to tackling infrastructure and sanitation issues.

He asked people to follow instructions, report unsanitary behaviour and other dangerous behaviours, and support ongoing initiatives to save lives and enhance conditions throughout Accra.
