A high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), headed by its Director General, paid a courtesy call to the Ministry of Health today to continue talks over Ghana’s possible role as the host of a new office for the West African Health Organization (WAHO).
Ghana’s ability to be a key player in furthering WAHO’s strategic vision for regional health integration was emphasized throughout the discussion.

One of the main points of emphasis was the plan to open a WAHO office in Ghana.
Both sides recognized the substantial advantages that such an office would provide, such as improved health program coordination, a more robust response to public health emergencies, and more chances for regional technical collaboration.
The delegation was cordially received by Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Honourable Minister for Health, who also conveyed gratitude for WAHO’s continued dedication to promoting cooperation among ECOWAS member nations and bolstering regional health systems.

Hon. Akandoh emphasized Ghana’s readiness and willingness to assist WAHO’s goals while restating the nation’s impressive record in medical research, public health leadership, and the development of health infrastructure.
“We are honoured by WAHO’s interest in Ghana and excited about the prospect of deepening our collaboration. Hosting a WAHO office would not only strengthen our partnership but also reinforce Ghana’s position as a hub for health innovation and coordination in West Africa,” he stated.
The WAHO team applauded the Ministry’s willingness to collaborate and Ghana’s proactive involvement in regional health initiatives.
In order to enhance health outcomes and create robust, sustainable healthcare systems throughout the West African subregion, Minister Akandoh emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to collaborating closely with regional and global partners.
