The Speaker of Parliament has been petitioned by Kwame Asare Obeng, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, to remove Abena Osei-Asare from her position as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee due to concerns over her impartiality and possible conflict of interest.
In a November 3 letter, Obeng, Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as “A Plus,” contended that Osei Asare’s prior position as Deputy Minister of Finance during Ken Ofori-Atta’s administration, which was characterised by alleged fiscal irresponsibility and contentious contracts, calls into question her suitability to chair the committee.
Under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) are the contracts in question, including the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) contract and the ECG-Beijing Jao Loss Reduction agreement.
Osei Asare’s defence of Ghana Revenue Authority Commissioner-General Rev. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, who declined to reveal his age, was also cited by Mr. Obeng as proof of her dubious dedication to accountability and transparency.
The petition draws attention to worries that parliamentary oversight and public confidence may be jeopardised if Osei Asare continues to lead the Public Accounts Committee.
Atiwa East MP Abena Osei Asare is a member of the New Patriotic Party and was the Deputy Finance Minister from 2017 until 2025.
“The Public Accounts Committee remains one of Parliament’s most critical instruments for ensuring transparency, accountability, and the responsible use of public funds,” A Plus stated.
“It is deeply concerning that Hon. Abena Osei Asare, former Deputy Minister of Finance, now serves as the Chairperson of this important committee.”
