Accra, Savannah sign sister city agreement

Ghana’s capital city Accra and Savannah, Georgia in the USA have solidified their bond by signing a sister city agreement aimed at fostering cultural, economic, and educational exchanges between the two cities.  

The historic agreement which was signed on Thursday through a virtual ceremony, with dignitaries and officials from both cities in attendance signified a commitment to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation in various fields, including trade, tourism, and education.

 Mayor Elizabeth K.T Sackey of Accra and Mayor Van R. Johnson II of Savannah, who signed the agreements on behalf of their cities expressed their enthusiasm for the partnership and the opportunities it presents for both cities. 

Mayor Sackey highlighted the cultural richness and diversity of Accra, adding that the signing of the sister city agreement served as a reminder of the strength, resilience, and achievements of the Black community during this year’s black history month– a narrative that echoes in the histories of both our cities.

” Through this sister city agreement, we are opening avenues for cultural exchange, economic collaboration, and educational opportunities that will propel our cities into a future of shared prosperity… By joining forces, Accra and Savannah pledge to champion these ideals, fostering a sense of unity that celebrates our shared humanity,” she said.  

She was hopeful the agreement would help build bridges, break barriers, and create opportunities for mutual growth and development.

Mayor Johnson emphasised Savannah’s historical significance and vibrant community while stressing the significance of people-to-people connections in strengthening international relations.

 He praised the rich cultural heritage of Accra and expressed his eagerness to explore opportunities for collaboration in various sectors.

The sister city agreement outlines several areas of collaboration, including cultural exchange programs, economic development initiatives, educational partnerships, as well as efforts to promote tourism between the two cities.
