The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Asafoatse Nettey Road, Rawlings Park, and the Agbogbloshie Lorry Park are among the important sites in the Central Business District (CBD) where the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has started a large cleanup effort.

Under the auspices of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), the exercise, which took place on Friday, February 28, 2025, was organized in accordance with President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda for the reintroduction of National Sanitation Day. It was part of the inaugural Regional Sanitation Day, which aimed to improve sanitation in the city in advance of the March 6th Independence Day celebrations.

On behalf of the Coordinating Director, Douglas N.K. Annoful, Engineer Solomon Noi, Director of Waste Management at the AMA, spoke following the exercise and emphasized that the initiative was a part of ongoing efforts to keep the city clean. He also urged the public and traders to stop disposing of waste carelessly, especially by throwing trash in plastic bags onto the streets.

He clarified that the scope of work for this specific cleanup, because of its duration, included sweeping, weeding, brushing, and desilting.

Speaking on the initiative’s sustainability, Engineer Noi revealed that the three Sub-Metropolitan Areas of the AMA—Ashiedu Keteke, Ablekuma South, and Okaikoi South—would alternately host the Regional Sanitation Day on the last Friday of each month.

“The next clean-up exercise in March will focus on Ablekuma South, followed by Okaikoi South in April, before returning to Ashiedu Keteke,” he said.

He asked all citizens to actively participate in keeping Accra clean and praised the involvement of businesses and community organizations in the event.

In addition to urging locals to bring their trash and sanitation supplies for collection at upcoming cleanup events, he reassured the public that the AMA will continue the program.
