President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday introduced Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh also known as Napo to the Asantehene as the running mate of the NPP presidential candidate prior to his official unveiling at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi

Political analyst, Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato has said the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has given the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), the biggest-ever endorsement in Ghana’s political history.

President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday introduced Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh also known as Napo to the Asantehene as the running mate of the NPP Flagbearer prior to his official unveiling at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace on Tuesday (9 July), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged Dr Opoku Prempeh to be submissive to the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He also urged him to ensure that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia never regrets selecting him [Dr Opoku Prempeh] as his running mate for the forthcoming 2024 general election, adding that he is not arrogant as being perceived in some quarters.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (10 July), Zaato said the NPP achieved the purpose of outdooring its running mate in the Ashanti Region.

“I think the NPP had one objective in Kumasi; it was to cause shock and awe, it was to show brute political force and it was to show that their support in Kumasi is not shaken and will not be shaken. And they achieved that to perfection.”

“And in achieving that they also achieved other things that were not overtly advertised that we all knew they needed. The NPP wanted an endorsement from the Asantehene and Manhyia.  And they got it fully from Manhyia and no other person than the Asantehene himself … basically giving the NPP probably one of the biggest and most sought political endorsements you could want in this country.”

“… They had the Asantehene bearing a character witness to their running mate, literally telling Ghanaians in the face that this is my son in whom I am well pleased, He knows better, he can do better and will do better. That is the type of character endorsement money cannot buy,” Zaato said.
