Some persons believed to be thugs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday clashed with police at the Regional Delegates Conference in the Ashanti Region.
The heavily built men who did not have accreditation were prevented from entering the Kumasi Sports Stadium where the elections were being held.
The police managed to arrest one of them as they restored calm. But his colleagues will not allow the police to take the suspect away; resulting in some altercation.
The men swore to prevent the cops from removing the suspect from their sight. So they engaged in battle with them for a while,” an eyewitness said.
Meanwhile, it is against the law to use thugs in local elections.
Security would not be compromised during the election process, according to Chairman of the Election Committee Nuru Hamidan.
“The stadium has no personal security. In order to secure the stadium and safeguard lives, we have made arrangements with state security. We will give personal security for any candidate who feels uneasy or needs it; thugs won’t be tolerated, and security will be rigorous, he stated.
