Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has called on Ghana to move beyond economic stabilisation and implement bold structural reforms to achieve sustainable economic growth, create jobs, and improve living standards.

Speaking during his New Economy engagement with lecturers and students at the University of Ghana, Dr Forson said the country must address the root causes of its economic challenges rather than continue managing short-term pressures.

“We have stabilised the present. Now we must secure the future,” the Finance Minister stated, emphasising the need for long-term economic planning and decisive public policy reforms.

He noted that Ghana had reached a critical stage in its economic development, requiring leaders and policymakers to abandon outdated approaches and introduce reforms capable of transforming the country’s economic structure.

According to Dr Forson, the next phase of Ghana’s economic agenda must focus on building a productive economy that generates decent jobs, increases household incomes, and creates lasting prosperity for future generations.

The Finance Minister stressed that economic stability should serve as a foundation for broader structural transformation, rather than being treated as the ultimate goal of economic management.

He further highlighted the importance of strengthening local production, adding value to agricultural and mineral resources, and expanding opportunities for Ghanaian businesses and workers.

Dr Forson’s remarks place industrial development, local manufacturing, job creation, value addition, and sustainable economic growth at the centre of the government’s New Economy agenda.

He indicated that Ghana must pursue policies that reduce its dependence on external markets, improve productivity, support local enterprises, and establish a stronger foundation for long-term economic prosperity.

The engagement at the University of Ghana provided an opportunity to discuss the country’s economic direction and the policy choices needed to support future generations.
