The Office of the Attorney General has filed an amended charge sheet at the High Court against Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in connection with the ongoing Exim Bank case.
The latest development increases the number of charges against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from four to five.
The new charge sheet was filed on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in relation to a GH¢30 million loan facility. Following the filing, the previous charge sheet containing four charges is expected to be withdrawn and replaced with the amended version.
Chairman Wontumi Faces Five Charges
Under the new charge sheet, Wontumi is expected to face charges including defrauding by false pretence, two counts of uttering forged documents, money laundering and intentionally causing financial loss to a public body.
The charge of intentionally causing financial loss to a public body is brought under Section 179A(2) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Wontumi is being prosecuted alongside Thomas Antwi-Boasiako, who is currently at large, and Wontumi Farms Limited.
High Court Adjourns Case to October 13
The latest development was brought before the presiding judge, Justice Halimah El-Alawah Abdul-Baasit, on Tuesday.
The High Court subsequently adjourned the matter to October 13, 2026, to allow the Attorney General to formally withdraw the earlier charge sheet and substitute it with the newly filed charges.
Wontumi’s plea is expected to be taken after the amended charge sheet is formally substituted.
Background to the Exim Bank Case
Before the latest amendment, Chairman Wontumi, Thomas Antwi-Boasiako and Wontumi Farms Limited were facing four charges under a charge sheet filed on May 15, 2026.
The prosecution follows issues surrounding the GH¢30 million loan facility and forms part of an ongoing legal case before the Ghana High Court.
An earlier attempt to reach a plea bargain with the state did not succeed, meaning the case was expected to proceed through the normal trial process before the Attorney General introduced the latest charges.
The October 13 hearing is expected to provide the next major development in the Chairman Wontumi Exim Bank case.
