Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has rejected calls for his resignation and announced that he has taken a 10-day leave of absence to concentrate on the NDC parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East.
Following the passing of the constituency’s MP, Mahama Naser Toure, Baba Jamal is one of six candidates who have selected nomination forms to run in the primary before the by-election on March 3.
He stated that his choice to run does not clash with his diplomatic responsibilities in an exclusive interview with Citi News on Sunday, January 25. He emphasised that his position will only be surrendered if he wins the parliamentary attempt.
Additionally, he urged delegates to take into account his background and ability to influence change within the constituency.
In the meantime, six candidates have selected nomination papers to run in the Ayawaso East National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in front of the by-election on March 3.
They include Dr. Yakubu Azindow, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, Mohammed Ramme, the party’s constituency chairman, and Hajia Amina Adam, the late member of parliament’s widow.
Salam Daru and Najib Mohammed Sani are the other two.
Rashid Tanko Computer, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, described the events building up to the February 7 primary in an interview with Citi News Digest, calling the contest an intriguing one.
“At the close of nominations today, six persons picked nomination forms to contest the upcoming primaries. The wife of the late MP was the last person to pick nominations today. It is going to be a very interesting contest. The filing will be on January 27, which is Tuesday.
“We are waiting to see how many of them will bring their forms,” he reiterated.
