The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to introduce a new series of Ghana cedi banknotes in November, featuring enhanced security, durability and modern design elements aimed at strengthening the country’s currency system.
The new banknotes, known as the “Heritage Series,” will officially be launched on November 3, 2026, at Bank Square in Accra, according to Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama.
The central bank said the redesigned cedi notes are intended to provide stronger protection against counterfeit currency, withstand extended circulation and improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of managing Ghana’s currency.
According to the Bank of Ghana, the redesign became necessary as banknote security technology and international standards continue to evolve, while the core designs of the existing Ghana cedi notes have remained in circulation for more than two decades.
New Cedi Notes to Highlight Ghanaian Heritage
The Heritage Series banknotes will feature contemporary designs inspired by Ghana’s national identity, culture, history and heritage.
Governor Asiama said the new currency designs will incorporate Ghanaian iconographic elements, while also providing an opportunity to recognise national heroes and showcase important aspects of the country’s cultural heritage.
The introduction of the new cedi notes, however, will not make the existing banknotes invalid.
The Bank of Ghana has confirmed that the Heritage Series will circulate alongside the existing Ghana cedi banknotes currently in use.
Members of the public will therefore not be required to exchange or withdraw their existing currency simply because the new banknotes have been introduced.
BoG Urges Public to Handle Cedi Notes Properly
Governor Asiama has also appealed to businesses, traders, banks and the general public to adopt proper practices when handling Ghana cedi banknotes.
He said careful handling can help extend the lifespan of banknotes and reduce the cost associated with replacing damaged currency.
The Bank of Ghana urged the public to avoid practices such as writing on banknotes, stapling notes, crumpling currency and using cedi notes for decorative purposes, including money bouquets and money spraying.
The central bank said responsible handling of currency will help maintain the quality and durability of Ghana’s banknotes.
The launch of the Heritage Series forms part of efforts to modernise Ghana’s financial system and currency management framework, while ensuring that the cedi remains secure, durable and suitable for changing economic conditions.
The Bank of Ghana has described the new initiative with the message: “The Cedi, our future, secure, designed to last.”
The new Ghana cedi banknotes will enter circulation after their November 3, 2026 launch and will continue to circulate alongside the existing series.
