The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has joined the Ghana Maritime Authority to mark World Maritime Day 2026, held under the theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence.”
Speaking at the event, Minister Nikpe highlighted the strategic importance of Ghana’s maritime sector to international trade, employment, industrial development and regional economic integration.
He stressed the need for government policies and strategies in the maritime industry to move beyond planning and translate into practical, measurable outcomes that can support Ghana’s economic growth.
According to the Transport Minister, the government is working to establish Ghana as a leading maritime hub in West Africa through major investments and reforms across the country’s port and shipping infrastructure.
Key initiatives include the expansion of Tema Port, the implementation of 24-hour port operations, the transformation of Takoradi Port, and improvements in maritime services to strengthen Ghana’s position in global trade.
Minister Nikpe also called for stronger collaboration among institutions within the maritime industry, effective regulation, investment in skilled maritime professionals, port digitisation, enhanced safety standards and improved environmental protection.
He said the government remains committed to developing a safe, secure, competitive and sustainable maritime sector capable of creating jobs, attracting investment and generating long-term economic opportunities for Ghanaians.
The government believes continued investment in Ghana’s ports, shipping industry and maritime infrastructure will help boost international trade and strengthen the country’s role in regional economic development.
