In the event that he wins the presidency in the general elections of 2024, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has vowed to prioritize agriculture.

In the course of a formal visit with Sandem-Nab, Paramount Chief Nab Azaksuk Azantilow of the Builsa Traditional Area, Dr. Bawumia presented a bold plan to revolutionize the agriculture industry.

During his campaign visit in the Upper East Region, Dr. Bawumia gave farmers assurances that he would look to form alliances with nations such as Brazil and China in order to embrace cutting-edge technologies and best practices that would greatly increase crop yield.

In order to improve production, Dr. Bawumia promised to set up District Agricultural Mechanization Centers in farming regions. These centers would provide reasonably priced equipment.

He said he wanted to study countries that produced more rice and maize than any other country.

“Agriculture is going to be my number one priority. We will make sure that we have all the different pillars in place for farmers,” he emphasised.

“I want to bring in the best practices from countries like Brazil and China that have higher productivity in crops such as maize and rice. We want to also learn from them to adopt some of those technologies that are giving them two or three times the yields per acre that we are doing,” he said.

“I want Ghana to move away from chemical fertilizers for our soil to lime. Lime is the way forward. We have limestone in Ghana and it is much cheaper than the fertilizer, and we want to help the farmers with this new soil fertility treatment through lime,” he added.

In addition, Dr. Bawumia promised to advocate for the application of lime to increase soil fertility rather than chemical fertilizers.
