New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to rebuild the La Pleasure Beach economy and provide leases to businesses operating at the beachfront if he is elected President of Ghana.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia criticised the recent demolition of structures at La Pleasure Beach, raising concerns about the destruction of movable assets that could reportedly have been removed by their owners before the exercise.
According to the NPP flagbearer, La Pleasure Beach is an important social, economic, cultural and international asset that supports the livelihoods of thousands of people, particularly young people involved in tourism and beach-related businesses.
Bawumia promises La Beach redevelopment
Dr Bawumia said an NPP government under his leadership would redesign and redevelop the La Pleasure Beach area to meet the required standards while supporting businesses operating within the beachfront.
He pledged to assist operators to improve their businesses and create a development framework that would allow smaller enterprises to operate alongside Labadi Beach Hotel and other major establishments.
As part of his proposed redevelopment programme, Dr Bawumia said his government would issue leases to individual businesses and operators working at the beach.
The policy, he said, would provide greater certainty for businesses while supporting the long-term development of the local beach tourism economy.
Bawumia pledges action on Laboma Beach
The NPP flagbearer also promised to engage the owners of Laboma Beach to address outstanding concerns and assist them in establishing their businesses.
He said the operations of businesses in the area would also be brought into compliance with Ghanaian laws and relevant regulations.
Dr Bawumia further pledged to address flooding and environmental challenges around the lagoon, describing the intervention as an important part of efforts to develop the area and protect livelihoods.
La Pleasure Beach and Ghana tourism
Dr Bawumia said La Pleasure Beach had developed into one of Ghana’s vibrant beach tourism destinations, providing economic opportunities for thousands of people.
He noted that the beachfront had hosted international events and functions and contributed to activities associated with Ghana’s Year of Return, which attracted visitors and international attention to the country.
The NPP flagbearer said his proposed interventions would focus on protecting existing jobs while creating opportunities for further growth within the tourism, hospitality and beach economy.
“I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” Dr Bawumia said.
