The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Kwasi Asiama, has disclosed that he resigned from the Board of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) about five months ago.

Dr Asiama said he no longer attends or participates in meetings of the GoldBod Board, following his decision to step down from the position.

His comments come after concerns were raised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over his reported membership of the GoldBod Board and whether his roles at the central bank and GoldBod could create a potential conflict of interest.

The concerns were raised by former Finance Minister and Karaga Member of Parliament, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, during an NPP press briefing on September 1, 2026.

The issues raised included the relationship between the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod, the central bank’s role in financing gold purchases and reported losses associated with the domestic gold purchase programme.

Asiama Explains GoldBod Board Resignation

Speaking during a question-and-answer session at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on September 24, 2026, Dr Asiama confirmed that he had already resigned from the GoldBod Board.

He said he had stepped down approximately five months earlier and was no longer involved in the board’s meetings.

The BoG Governor also explained that the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140) does not require the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to personally serve on the GoldBod Board.

According to Dr Asiama, the law allows the Bank of Ghana to be represented on the GoldBod Board either by the Governor or another Bank of Ghana official with a rank up to director.

Bank of Ghana Representation on GoldBod

Dr Asiama said the legal framework governing GoldBod provides flexibility regarding who represents the central bank on the Board.

He explained that while the Bank of Ghana is required to have representation, the law does not specifically require the Governor to occupy the position personally.

The clarification is expected to provide further context to discussions surrounding GoldBod, the Bank of Ghana, gold purchases and Ghana’s domestic gold trading programme.

It also comes amid broader public interest in the operations of GoldBod and the role of the central bank in Ghana’s gold sector.
